“As anyone would find going through old files or memorabilia of their life, you see one photo and that can be the catalyst for an hour’s worth of thought, recollection, laughter and tears, and the emotional roller-coaster,” Gilchrist told the Herald Sun.“It was a really fulfilling exercise and another wonderful recollection of the fantastic experience I was able to have on the way.
“That’s why I look back, because cricket for me is a microcosm of life and the ups and downs of the journey even in just one game.“To compile something like this we needed to keep putting more and more time aside, but fortunately there was plenty of good stuff put aside by my dad and myself.”
As well as the inside story behind some of cricket’s recent memorable moments, the treasure trove shines a light on Gilchrist’s personal journey — from the future star pleading with companies for sponsorship and practising his signature for school mates in case he ever became famous, to nagging his father to set him a rigorous training schedule.“I hope people don’t read that and get the wrong idea that Dad was standing over me with a whip to make me do it — it was my appetite and desire to want to train that he had to keep with rather than being demanding of me,” Gilchrist said.
I would like to think that this book has a dedicated chapter on why he and the rest of his committee lumbered the Australian public with the most divisive political Australian of the year that has ever been foisted onto us in Adam Goodes ? I have always thought the Australian of the Year award was for the unsung hero's all across this great land the mums and dads or grand parents that selflessly give their time to whatever cause or deed that needs doing and they do it for free ...they serve on committees for decades on top of decades for no more reason than it needs to be done be it at a hospital auxiliary for 40+ years or the local cemetery for 50 years and more but no they give to people that are well rewarded in other ways as well as $$$ or fame and its wrong especially sports millionaires or actors give it to who it was intended for and stop with the elitism ....please....:-).
Oh dear I am getting old so please accept this PS where I said the local Cemetery for 50 years I should have added that the gentleman that is the Chairman of the trust there who has been doing the same job for the stated 50 years !! It is hard to fathom the dedication he has shown going to what has been at least for the 12 or 14 years I have served with him 1 meeting per month and several times in working hours every week for various problems or situations that needed his expertise and that is more deserving than anything the current holder has done and possibly more than likely ever will do .... of course this is and always will be only my opinion.
